Smart Decisions:
Helping Youth Survive Today's World

On December 10th, 2013, the Long Island Youth Safety Coalition hosted its fall conference at Hofstra University.  The conference, entitled “Smart Decisions: Helping Youth Survive Today’s World,” was different than most of the previous conferences we’ve held.  Instead of being specifically focused on one issue, such as sports safety or dangerous driving, it was a smorgasbord event encompassing many of the topics we face when we think about the safety of our children.  Almost 300 people attended, even with the snow we unfortunately received that morning!

After breakfast, the group sat together for a keynote address given by Hon. Judith Kaye, the former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals.  Her speech was mostly focused on her campaign for reform in our schools, and was rated extremely highly by all in attendance.

The group broke out into workshop sessions for the remainder of the day, with topics ranging from substance abuse to eating disorders and safe driving to cyberbullying and more.  The workshops were well attended and we received feedback from the attendees that they appreciated the knowledge that was gained.  The day ended with a panel discussion from Long Island’s top youth leaders on the challenges that they themselves as young people face in today’s world, and it proved to be a very moving session.

We hope that if you missed this great event, you will keep an eye open for our next conference, details to be announced soon.
