Youth leadership is an important part of the youth development process. Youth development experiences are connected to positive outcomes in youth including decreases in negative behaviors and increases in positive attitudes and behaviors. The following are resources available for parents, professionals, and youth to find youth leadership development programs throughout Long Island. Resources are constantly being updated. Fact Sheets/Tips/Flyers Texas State University provides a youth engagement toolkit that highlights the benefits of youth leadership Michigan State University supplies information on the importance of having youth in leadership positions and developing skills Internet Sites High school students learn the ins and outs of the legal process by having the opportunity to serve as a judge, juror, and attorney in cases of their peers Middle and High School Students come together to serve as voice for local youth Coordination between Elmont and Floral Park to develop and maintain a youth council Pride for Youth is under the Division of the Long Island Crisis Center. Pride for Youth offers several opportunities for young LGBTQ+ people (under 21) to get actively involved in work for the community Youth Enrichment Services (YES) offers a variety of programs designed to build leadership skills in our youth, programs include youth advisory councils and a leadership project designed for children with special needs The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB) has established a youth leadership program that engages Long Island's growing youth leaders in the fight against bullying Habitat for Humanity, a national organization, provides a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals ages 5 to 40 Town of Brookhaven Department of Parks, Recreation and Sports, and Cultural Resources offers a variety of sports programs both for youths and adults The Long Academy of Fine Art offers artistic programs for youth entering grades 3-7 and for teens The Suffolk County Youth Police Academy is a free 5 day camp for teenagers to experience what it takes to become a police officer Suffolk County Community College provides a variety of youth programs for youth to experience STEM and digital arts fields Best Buddies is a volunteer-based organization.
